The Unsung Hero program recognizes ZIN™ Members around the world for their outstanding contributions to their communities, and for their ability to inspire others. This month, we celebrate ZIN™ Member, Tamieka Milledge, ZCOM volunteer, Carla Felder, and the Zumba® community for their heartfelt work to help those who lost everything in the catastrophic flooding in South Carolina in October.
In October, the citizens of Columbia, South Carolina experienced the most devastating flooding in the history of the state. Families were displaced from their homes, and many lost everything. In these moments, community leaders, Carla Felder and Tamieka Milledge, together with their fellow instructors and students, immediately came together to help their community.
Students began bringing donations into class, and they organized a Zumbathon® charity event, with lots of local instructors donating their time and talents to help. With the great help of the amazing people of Columbia and the surrounding areas, through this event, collecting donations in their weekly classes, and organizing a GoFund Me account, they were able to adopt five families in Columbia, make donations to individuals and also make a donation to the United Way of Midlands. The community is even continuing to donate to the Go Fund Me and bring items to classes each week!
This is a beautiful example of the seemingly endless capacity Zumba instructors have to do good in the world. Tamieka, Carla and the community in South Carolina, thank you for all that you’re doing for each other.
