Spread the Serotonin: How Zumba® Is Celebrating Mental Health Day All Month Long

Sometimes you just need to tune out and turn up. Forget your worries, break a sweat, then break out into a smile. Zumba® class is not just a physical thing — it’s the ultimate mood booster! So we decided to take it a salsa step further by joining the mental health conversation this October, in honor of World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Our Zumba® Love philanthropic platform’s mission is to channel the joy people feel every day in Zumba® classes into charitable initiatives that raise funds and awareness for causes important to our global community. Starting with a donation to the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), we will be using our platform for awareness, support, and information about the importance of mental health — all month long. 

Here’s a peek at what we have up our (neon) sleeves:

Total Emotional Transformation

It’s no surprise to anyone who’s danced in a Zumba class that, over the course of an hour, you go through a total emotional transformation! All October long, we’ll be releasing our “In + Out” series to capture that incredible change. Each post will feature epic reactions in the form of “before and after” pics. Be sure to follow us @Zumba on Instagram to get a glimpse of the magic! (Hint: there’s a lot of smiles.) 

Saved You a Spot!

Every Tuesday, through our Saved You A Spot series, mental health expert Nedra Tawwab will share educational tips on topics related to mental health, both for your own awareness and to be a support system to those in need.

Week 1: Mental Fitness (live now!)

Find a healthy balance between keeping the brain exercised and making time for relaxation!

Week 2: Social Anxiety (Coming Oct 12)

Defining triggers, plus sharing resources and tips if you or someone you know is dealing with social anxiety.

Week 3: Body Positivity and Body Neutrality (Coming Oct 19)

You can equally love your body for how it looks, while also appreciating the amazing things your body can do.

Week 4: Postpartum Feels (Coming Oct 26)

Some new parents experience postpartum depression after giving birth. And it’s time we talk about it!

Karen Wachenheim:

Calling all mamas, papas, soon-to-be parents, and support systems! Zumba® Instructor Karen Wachenheim is also sharing her knowledge — this time about “Postpartum Feels.” Karen is on the Board of Directors and serves as Treasurer of Postpartum Support International. She has experienced the effects of postpartum depression (twice!) herself and made it her mission to bring awareness and education to as many people as possible.
