We’ve all seen before and after photos – with tons of great weight loss stories featured in our very own Zumba® stories – but on October 10th, Zumba® is doing something different. In celebration of World Mental Health Day, we’re redefining Before and After and featuring how people improved their mental health through exercise.
We teamed up with celebrity photographer Raven B. Varona to highlight the emotional rather than physical change people experience after participating in Zumba®. Not only do these wonderful Zumba® participants look happier “after”, but we have heard from many that Zumba® acts as a way for individuals to relieve stress and cope with their anxiety, even helping people to overcome things like post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. In fact, studies have shown that individuals who exercised reported feeling down 43% fewer days compared to people who did not exercise. Additionally, low-intensity exercise like Zumba® spurs the release of proteins called neurotrophic or growth factors, which cause cells to grow and make new connections. The result: people who are depressed showed significant signs of elevated mood after participating in exercise.
Zumba® CEO Alberto Perlman shared, “When I saw Zumba® for the first time, the thing that struck me the most was that everybody was smiling. Happiness seemed to be the objective of the workout… It’s truly unbelievable the way we are seeing the Zumba® movement positively impact people in our communities.”We encourage you to keep dancing, not only for the physical benefits, but for the emotional ones too. Check out these joyful faces for inspiration!
