How I Lost Weight After Years of Yo-Yo Dieting

“Hello, my name is Lena, and I am a Zumba-holic! I really don’t think there are words to describe the true impact that Zumba has made in my life. Like so many people, I’ve struggled with my weight. I’ve tried every diet gimmick, only to get bored and pick up on my bad habits again. I was never able to maintain a healthy weight, so it was no surprise when I stepped on the scale and saw my largest number ever: 237. I remember feeling so sad and so ashamed that I had really let myself get that heavy. I shouted, ‘I am never eating again!’.

Well, that lasted as long as my stomach didn’t growl. However, it was the start of where I am today. I started eating less calories each day, drinking tons of water, walking on a daily basis, and sometimes going to classes at Curves. By the time I lost 30 pounds, I did not enjoy exercising at all and had to promise myself things to stay motivated and stay away from picking up my bad habits.

One day at Curves, I decided to try a Zumba class. You see, I was the little girl you saw dancing whenever a good beat was playing (thank goodness there weren’t camera phones when I grew up). Do you know what I found in that class? A life-changing, mind-blowing experience. In that first class, I was greeted by the regulars like I was their best friend. The music started and it was loud, the energy was infectious, and you couldn’t slap the smile off my face.

So how has Zumba changed my life? That first class was two years ago. Now, I go five days and do seven classes a week. It doesn’t fit my schedule, it IS my schedule. My life has been filled with love and support from strangers who became sisters. What those classes have given me is something I had never experienced before in my life: passion. I have found my passion and my life will be forever happier and healthier.

The best advice I would give somebody struggling with their own journey is to make it fun! Find something you like, set a goal, and be competitive. Make it part of your schedule as if your life depends on it, because it does!”
