“I live in a small town in Serbia called Sabac. There are not a lot of opportunities for women here when it comes to careers, or even for recreational pleasure. I had been working in a bank for ten years when I woke up one day, deciding there was more for me in this life. I happened to go to a Zumba class and, right after that first class, I was hooked. I thought ‘This is it’.
I became a licensed Zumba Instructor, and in just one short month, I formed a group of students who came to my classes regularly. I could not believe what was happening to me.
Zumba infected my city in such a positive way. Six months after I got my teaching license, I wanted to do more and decided to take the Zumba Kids specialty training. I am proud to say I formed the first Zumba Kids group in Serbia. Eventually, I opened my own studio named NIKA and three of my students have since become instructors, now teaching within my NIKA studio.
We have become so popular in Serbia that now, every weekend, we have a bus full of NIKA STARS traveling around Serbia teaching Zumba classes!
I’m so happy that I, the ex-bank lady, found myself completely in this program. My town has 50,000 inhabitants and, after all these years, Zumba is still spreading around. I proudly stand in front of 100 kids and 60 adult students every week and I feel lucky that I belong to the 1 percent of the people in the world who do the work they love.
My real name is Sanja Niksic, but everybody calls me Sanja Zumba. And to be honest, I love it!”
