Who is the Woman Behind Justin Bieber’s Dance Moves?

Parris solo b&w (1)

Admit it: you sit around and are blown away by the fire dance moves that J.Lo, Beyonce, the Justins (Timberlake and Bieber), and more bring to the table. But do you ever think about who is teaching them those dance moves? Enter Parris Goebel, the bad**s choreographer we want to be when we grow up. First of all, she dances in an all female crew known as ReQuest (amazing – check them out in JB’s Sorry video). Secondly, she created her own choreography style known as Polyswagg (amazing x 2). And last but not least, she’s already worked with tons of superstars and she’s just 24 years old! We recently got to know her a bit better.

ZLife: How did you get started and what’s it like to be where you are now?

Parris: I always remember dancing from a young age. I danced before I could walk. I did performing arts for 2 years when I was young and found the one thing I really loved was hip hop. From then I have never looked back, as I love to dance everyday and now I get paid to do what I love.

ZLife: What would you say was your big break?

Parris: When Jennifer Lopez saw my work on You Tube and rang me up to come and choreograph some numbers for her world tour.

ZLife: How has the dance industry changed/evolved?

Parris: When I first started dancing, it was really male dominated. But now, females are also at the forefront of dance.

ZLife: How do you ensure that you’re always keeping up with the latest dance trends?

Parris: I create them myself.

ZLife: What is your favorite genre of music/dance?

Parris: Dancehall is my favorite dance right now. I love the freedom of movement; the hits you can make on the beats and energy that come from dancehall.

ZLife: What’s a typical day like for you?

Parris: Every day is actually very different because of the variety of jobs that I do. All I know is the days are long and I work hard every day. The timeframes I have to do everything in are very challenging and demanding and hectic. But seeing what I create come to life, and working with artists who embrace my ideas makes it all worth it.

ZLife: What inspires you and how does that show through in your choreography?

Parris: I am inspired by the world around me – music, fashion, photos, film and the circles of life I pass through. It all makes me who I am today and that then shows in my choreography.

ZLife: You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in music, like Justin Bieber. What was that experience like?

Parris: Justin was great to work with. He is really a true artist and very passionate about his work. I recently did 13 music videos for him in 3 weeks. Definitely a career highlight.

ZLife: Why do you think dance fitness workouts are so popular and successful?

Parris: Because you don’t have to be a super athlete to do dance fitness. I took a Zumba class and I really enjoyed the vibe. You can work at a level you are comfortable with and as always the music is so upbeat and fun.

ZLife: What do you think is the next big thing in dance?

Parris: Not sure – maybe something I am working on coming out this year…

ZLife: Any advice for people trying to make it in this industry?

Parris: You can’t beat hard work. Dream BIG, surround yourself with good people and be unique.
