The MTV Video Music Awards just aired and it was quite a show! We never miss the VMA’s because it’s a chance to see our favorite musicians doing their thing and it’s also a great opportunity to discover the next biggest artists and see beloved songs from Zumba® class come to life. And the 2017 awards show, hosted by Katy Perry, did not disappoint.
This year, attendees, presenters, and performers alike used the stage to speak out on important topics that everyone can relate to. It’s super inspiring to see artists using their voice to make the world a better place by spreading messages of love, hope, acceptance, and tolerance.
P!nk was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and used her time on stage as an opportunity to spread a message about being true to yourself. Speaking specifically to her young daughter, who has struggled with feeling unattractive, she mentioned that music is having an incredible moment and thanked all the artists for being so inspiring and true to themselves. It was an amazing moment.
Performers included show-opener and Video Of The Year Winner Kendrick Lamar, Logic with Alessia Cara and Khalid who performed in honor of mental health, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Lorde, Fifth Harmony with Gucci Mane, Demi Lovato, and 30 Seconds to Mars, who made a moving tribute to Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington.
Surprisingly, one of the biggest musical moments of the night did not come in the form of a live act. Instead, it happened when Taylor Swift debuted the official music video to her new song, ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ (which has already broken online streaming records in the very short time that it’s been out). If you had any doubts before, her message about putting her multiple reputations to rest is now loud and clear.
Just ahead, check out some of the most memorable performances of the night. Whose performance did you love?
Fifth Harmony with Gucci Mane ‘Down’
When can we ever resist a good dance show?
Alessia Cara ‘Scars To Your Beautiful’
At just 21 years of age, we love that Alessia never misses an opportunity to spread a positive message of accepting yourself as who you are.
Katy Perry with Nicki Minaj ‘Swish Swish’
An MTV VMA show is never complete without a major pop performance.
DNCE with Rod Stewart ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy’
This is our winner of the night because Rod Stewart getting on stage with DNCE is the greatest thing we’ve seen in a long time (apart from Joe Jonas’ mustache, of course).
