“I am Tasha and I am 29 years old. I’ve always struggled with my weight and with Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I came to a point where I was fed up with my health, my looks, and my happiness but I was always told ‘no’ when it came to losing weight simply because PCOS makes it very difficult for women to do so. But I knew I deserved a better quality of life, so I pursued it.
I originally did a 10 week weight loss boot camp which resulted in me losing 23 pounds. I thought ‘Well, this is a start.’ I joined a local YMCA and decided to try a Zumba class, but I was terrified because I had never danced with anyone or in front of anyone. Once the music started and we began dancing, it was like a weight was lifted. The shyness went away and so did the anxiety of gym phobia. The freedom of dancing in Zumba class and exercising without actually realizing you are exercising is what kept me coming back for more. It’s such an amazing feeling to let the music move you and relieve you of so much stress in just a one-hour class.
I have lost 160 pounds. When I have moments of discouragement and plateaus, it’s really important for me to look back at my progress pictures and remember where and why I started. I also remind myself not to compare my journey to anyone else, because it’s just that: MY journey.
The most emotional moment of this whole experience was when I hit 100 pounds lost, because I never thought that would happen for me. My doctor also cleared me of high blood pressure and diabetes and took me off all of my medications. And I am proud to say that I am now a Zumba Instructor myself. It’s truly a privilege.”
