These five exotic spa treatments use light, rhythm and tropical aromas to transport you to paradise.
1. Rhythm Massage. Add a fun, Latin twist to a traditional back rub. Miami-based massage therapist Dayalis Gonzalez compares her Energizing Rhythm Massage to “drinking a cup of Cuban coffee.” Playing tambores rhythms on your body and using cross friction, she rubs out tension and soreness in muscles to uplifting flamenco and salsa music. You leave feeling revitalized. If you’re looking for a mellower experience, the Relaxation Rhythm Massage syncs the masseuse’s touch to the slower rhythms of Spanish bolero music. Where to find it: The Ritz-Carlton Spa, South Beach, Miami, FL, USA, 786.276.4090, ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/SouthBeach/Spa, $155 for 50 minutes

2. Manaka Tapping Treatment. This 50-minute treatment employs a light wooden hammer called a manaka, used in Japan since the 16th century, to tap pegs on acupressure points along your body. Tapping to the beat of a metronome, the treatment works much like acupuncture—without the needles. The practitioner aims to ease your stress and pain by balancing your energy. Fans of the service claim to experience a feeling of euphoria. Where to find it: Lake Austin Spa Resort (which also offers Zumba classes), Austin, TX, USA, 800.847.5637, lakeaustin.com/east-asian-therapies.php, $155 for 50 minutes
3. South Pacific Shell Massage. Your massage therapist uses heated, tiger-striped-clam shells, gently rolling them over your knots and kinks, warming and loosening muscles to relieve aches and pains. A custom blend of essential oils, selected for you according to your need, is designed to give you a sense of peace or energize you. Either way, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to a tropical beach to forget your cares for an hour. Where to find it: Euphoria Spa, New York, NY, USA, 212.925.5925, euphoriaspanyc.com, $165 for 60 minutes
4. Honey-Citrus Hand & Foot Treatment. First, you sit in a candlelit room as feet and hands are softened with a warm soak that blends nourishing manuka honey (a rare variety from New Zealand) with the invigorating scent of Japanese yuzu citrus. Then a Cranberry Yuzu Sugar Scrub, with a blend of pure cane sugar, coconut oil, cranberry seeds and sunflower seeds, is used to exfoliate. Finally, you lie down, and hands and feet are pampered with a silky honey-lotion massage before being enclosed in mitts and booties filled with warm, antioxidant-rich paraffin, believed to neutralize free radicals, slow cell aging, reduce inflammation and promote collagen renewal. The result: vibrant, healthy, glowing skin where it takes the most abuse. Where to find it: The Pittsburgh Center for Complementary Health and Healing, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, 412.242.4220, pghhealthandhealing.com, $85 for 60 minutes
5. Alpha Light Oxy-LED Spa Treatment. Combining low-level infrared heat, massaging vibration, aromatherapy and oxygen, this high-tech treatment was created to energize, improve mood, reduce pain and bring clarity of mind. Surrounded by pleasing scents, you lie on the molded foam interior of a space-age pod with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that generate heat. While the capsule’s mattress vibrates, you sweat, which is said to speed up the body’s metabolism, assisting weight loss. The manufacturer also claims that the treatment quickens the healing of wounds and boosts the immune system. Where to find it: Royal Tunbridge Wells Skin and Laser Clinic, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, UK (38 miles southeast of London), 0800.6800.731, med-spa.co.uk/treatments.html, £35 (about $57 USA) for 45 minutes
Indulge Without Leaving the House
Can’t afford the time or expense to treat yourself to a spa service? Give yourself a little pampering at home.
Milk Bath. Soaking her feet in milk is believed to have been one of Cleopatra’s beauty secrets. 1) In a large saucepan over medium heat, warm equal parts milk and water to fill a basin large enough to fit both feet. 2) Stir often until the mixture thickens to a thin, lotion-like consistency, and heat to a temperature bearable for soaking. 3) Pour the mixture into a durable basin, and set the container on a towel in front of your most comfortable chair. Keep an extra towel handy for drying. 4) Put on some quiet music, dim the lights, and soak for 10 minutes. The lactic acid exfoliates skin, softening rough calluses, and the soak itself soothes your mind as well as your aching feet.
Post-Soak Scrub. While your feet are still soft from the soak, use a scoop of exfoliating scrub—homemade or store-bought—to slough off remaining rough spots on the tops and bottoms of your feet, including between each toe. Dip your feet back into the milky water to rinse, then slather on a rich cream and slip feet into socks to let the moisturizer soak into skin.
Make your own sugar scrub mix, combining 1/2 cup sugar with 2 tablespoons lotion or body butter, or use a premade salt mix like these:
