Dancing Freely in Guatemala

“At least once a year, I travel to Guatemala with Global Healthworks Foundation (GHF), a nonprofit organization comprised of alternative health practitioners who offer week-long health treatments to the Mayan people of Quiché, Guatemala. In the summer of 2014, I began offering Zumba classes to supplement the organization’s regular treatments.

My heart sang as they danced and laughed freely beneath the mountains of Quiché, unconcerned about the steps and simply enjoying the freedom to move their bodies. Many had never danced before; the simple salsa moves we practiced were the first dance steps they had ever taken.

Because a lot of these people lived during the longest-running civil war in the Western Hemisphere, they suffer from PTSD and anxiety. They have shared that Zumba classes have aided in letting go of some of their pain, as it provides an outlet for movement and emotional release.

There have been fewer joys than sharing the love of dance with these men and women. I carry their laughter and smiles with me throughout each year.”
