A Dance-Worthy Life

“I came to New York at the age of 21 to pursue dance. I was in the top level at the Alvin Alley school and, although I was performing quite well in my class, my curvy body was an issue. I remember auditioning for the revelation “corps de ballet” ensemble in a white unitard. I was told that although I definitely had the skill to be in the ensemble, I was rejected because I was slightly bigger than everybody else. You can imagine how that made me feel.  That became the fuel to my fire. I set out to help myself and along the way, found a career that allows me to also help others every single day.

It has been –  and still is – a journey where I am finally learning to love myself and be grateful for the things my body can achieve. I am now in my 40s and I feel simply amazing.

I always tell people to do what your heart tells you to do. There is nothing better than to do what you love and make a living out of it. Being able to help and impact people in a positive way  through being a Zumba Instructor is such a blessing. The community of amazing Zumba Instructors I have built in New York is such a blessing. As humans, we are meant to be together. Why not be together in a room full of people with the same goal: to feel better. And what better way to do it than with dance and music?”
